  1. Teaser Paragraph:

With our earlier coverage of Merchant it seems that a trend is and has been growing where more and more games are allowing players the opportunity to step into the shows of what have been background characters or even NPC’s in many games. Where Merchant lets you play as the typical fantasy item shop manager, Orcish Inn has players serving drinks, raising crops, and managing a busy (hopefully) tavern full of thirsty Orcs.

There’s a new kind of museum exhibit that has been created in Seattle. The Experience Music Project museum has expanded from the roots of music to encompass all forms of media, recently adding video games to the list. What makes this exhibit such an accomplishment is that each game is playable right in the museum.

On October 27th, developer Oovee Game Studios released a major update to the popular off-road driving simulator Spintires. While the update does address some technical issues, specifically issues with some of the multiplayer functionality, the main feature of this patch is the addition of peripheral support.

  7. Teaser Paragraph:

If recently Kickstarted game Aviary Attorney can say anything about the state of the games industry, it is that sometimes history can lend a lot more to a project than simple inspiration. For game developers Jeremy Noghani (Designer, programmer, and writer) and Mandy Lennon, (Artist, animator, and writer) looking through old books helped them stumble upon some magnificent and little known art, that they decided to appropriate and design a game around.

  8. Teaser Paragraph:

I'm looking towards the year ahead of us and all the promising indie titles of 2015 that could potentially be the sort of games that we will be reminiscing about this time next year. I was originally aiming for 50 games split into two articles, but the more I dig around the more uncertain I become of being able to trim the list down that low. As to whether or not any of these games will be good, well, I guess we'll just need to wait until 2016 to see just how accurate this list actually was.

  12. Teaser Paragraph:

Early Access is a peculiar idea. Gamers pay to test and work out the kinks in games prior to their official release. We’re paying to play unfinished games, which is weird given that many AAA developers have QA testers that get paid to do just that. And yet here we are with plenty of gamers spending money to test out betas and alphas of a game. The practice was frowned upon by many after some companies abused the idea to grab a quick buck, yet Early Access has done a lot to turn itself around, namely increasing the quality of these games and the overall mentality behind it. Some Early Access games even rise from the standard and turn out to be excellent.

  13. Teaser Paragraph:

As the indie games market continues to grow, all-stars that depict the best of what critics and players alike have come to expect of indie titles begin to appear. Many gaming fans include Faster Than Light (FTL) and the Penumbra series among the stand outs. Narrative designer Tom Jubert developed much of the experience that those games are known for, and has recently released The Swapper which is receiving plenty of critical acclaim itself for its puzzles and storytelling techniques.

  14. Teaser Paragraph:

2013 was a great year for indie games and now that it is gone, we’re excited for what the next year has in store for us. Some previously unknown names of both studios and individual designers were thrust in the spotlight over the last year gaining recognition and revenue for their amazing craftsmanship. Proteus smashed orthodox views of what defines a game and Don’t Starve dazzled gamers with its stellar use of hand-drawn artwork. Some genres evolved throughout the entire year; the multitude of innovative puzzle-types released last year includes some amazing experiences like Antichamber and Papers, Please. We saw interesting new ways of delivering narrative, way more art styles than we could ever count, and an overall sense that designers were now truly willing to step outside of the box when it came to designing new game play mechanics and challenging the established norms. Now we turn our gaze to the future to see what great things will come from the artists out there creating experiences for those of us who love what they do. In no particular order, here is what we at IGS are most excited about.

  16. Teaser Paragraph:

So, by now most people are aware that independent film festivals exist and movies are being promoted by individuals and accepted as a major area of interest outside of major production houses. This is also the case with video games. Researching the Independent Games Festival (IGF) website shows that the IGF has been around since 1998. UBM Tech (producer of Gamastra.com and the Game Developers Conference) made the IGF “to encourage innovation in game development and to recognize the best independent game developers”. Just as with the Sundance Film Festival, they pushed for recognizing independent game developers as well with cash prizes and notoriety.

Death Over The Kingdom is a game from Dream With Us Studio in Spain and is the subject of a new campaign on IndieGoGo. A party card game, it seems quick and easy to play from the instructions given and the art of the cards looks phenomenal. All of the rewards for pledging include any stretch goals met, which means that more cards could be added to the game.

Flippfly, developers of procedural racer Race The Sun, have released some rather depressing stats that prove just how important a Steam release is for a small indie game. Race The Sun came out a month ago and has only sold 771 copies, earning the two man dev team about $7400. Their worst day of sales ever was apparently the 16th, with a dismal two copies sold.
